Pintor y escritor italiano que desarrolló su carrera en Florencia. Se le atribuyen unas pocas pinturas que se han conservado, pero es más conocido como el autor de El libro del arte ( 1390), el texto de consulta más importante sobre la práctica artística de fines de la Edad Media. Sus detalladas descripciones sobre la pintura al temple y al fresco reflejan los procedimientos técnicos de la gran tradición pictórica florentina. Pensaba que la pintura poseía un lugar importante dentro de las ocupaciones porque combinaba la teoría o la imaginación con la destreza manual.
